New State Testing & Graduation Requirements
The Alabama High School Graduation Exam is being phased out and replaced with a new college and career readiness testing plan. For 2013-2014 End-Of-Course Assessments will be required for students completing course work in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, English 9, 10, & 11, biology, chemistry and US History. These tests will be given in December and May. Eventually, students will be required to take EOC exams in as many as 12 core subjects. Seniors who have not passed all parts of the AHSGE will still be required to take the parts of the AHSGE that they need, but no other grades are required to take the AHSGE. Instead, they will take the PLAN college and career readiness exam in 10th grade as well as the appropriate End-of-Course Exams. In 11th grade these students will take the ACT w/writing at school one time for free. This will be given on April 23, 2014. As 12 graders they will have the opportunity to earn a work-ready certificate by taking the WORKKEYS assessment. 8th graders will also take the EXPLORE college and career readiness exam. PLAN and EXPLORE will be administered in October. The ARMT+ test will be replaced by the new ACT Aspire exam for 3rd-8th grades.
The Class of 2017 will be the first class to earn the new Alabama HS Diploma. Beginning with this cohort group, Alabama will offer only one diploma; but students have different pathways to earn it. A student may prove to be college ready by taking advanced, Dual Enrollment or AP courses and/or meeting the ACT benchmark score. A student may prove he or she is career ready by completing a tech school program or showing career readiness on the WORKKEYS assessment. All students will take a career preparedness course that will help them in choosing a career pathway and enable them to identify the steps that they should take in high school in order to best prepare them to reach their goals.
